Art and such…
What is art? I have been interested and lured by its mystery from as early as I can remember, however feel my perception or boundaries of what it is, whilst reasonably broad, yet narrow in my juvenile, expand as my years progress. As I age up, I see art everywhere I go. The lines blurred between the everyday, the created and the creative. We are all artists, yet most so unexpressed.
Art is traditional. Circa museums, paintings, sculptures and the like. However, I now see art well beyond these scopes. Art exists in the everyday. In movement, in self expression, music, the human body’s propultion through space, silence, in flow from the minute we wake and what we wear (or don’t wear) when we run, to the macro and the way we live our days and our legacy left behind.
I feel my mind has been expanded through time and lived experience, however accelerated by individuals uncovered on social media, traditional print media (magazines, Zines, etc) and my own self expression, or lack there of. I ponder my art in my own world on a regular basis. Sometimes I feel myself balking at expression be that due to laziness, fear of others opinions or even reaching an age where tradition and the norm says to conform. Conform to what?
I get great satisfaction and drive seeing individuals ignoring the status quo and forging their own trail through artistic expression. Self, movement, fashion, ideals. Travis Barker, Toby Morse, Mikey Kratzer, (Mahalo) Martin, Lachlan Morton, Hakim Tafari, Anton Krupicka just to name a few. My idols and guiding lights through this dark world. I dare to dream that I can continue my trajectory in this life as these have elevated. Brands like Satisfy Running, Mental Athletic, Over Over and businesses that see art as a foundation and eternal focus, not as a trendy bi-product. For these authentic idealists, success is but a residual. A potential bonus to their leading ambition…art. All else is but a burry addition to their already sharply honed success. Monetary result the furthest thing from art there may be.
Renegades, political protestors, outliers, the oppressed, the unknown, the known, the ‘fortune finds once they pass’, the poor, the left behind, the keenly focused, the optimist, the visionary, the humble yet no regard for society folk, the dreamer, the real….you are art. You are expression in the purest form. Beyond physical pieces, your art resonates through your everyday.
I want my life to be art. As I move through my early 40s I strongly resist the temptation for easy, normal and resting on my creation. I yearn for more. I dream. I seek. I am inspired. I am art. I desire more…to never quench my insatiable thirst for expression…for art. I pray this never goes away. I pray for this to remain until the day I am in the ground and then I pray it lives on through others memory of my art. Art is eternal. What masterpiece are you creating today that will project into the world? If you find lacking, there’s no time like the present…go forth and create art.
